Acupuncture – a drug alternative for depression

Cynthia Graf rarely misses an acupuncture treatment.

“I usually come in the mornings, and the rest of the day I’m all smiles,” she says.

Practitioners will tell you that the Chinese have used acupuncture to life peoples’ spirits for thousands of years. So, licensed acupuncturist Kenneth Chow wasn’t surprised when he heard that researchers have discovered that acupuncture can trigger the release of “feel-good” chemicals in the brain.

“People in Asia commonly seek acupuncture prior to menopausal symptoms,” Chow notes.

Depression is one of the symptoms many women experience with mid-life hormonal changes. In his own practice, Chow says he treats women going through menopause and has seen the effect acupuncture can have.

“They’re just happier. Things don’t bother them as much,” he says.

Experts also see acupuncture as a good option for mothers-to-be who are depressed but don’t want to take prescription anti-depressants.

“Not everyone responds to depression medicine,” says Chow. “For those people, now acupuncture may be a good alternative.”

In people with mild to moderate depression, researchers now say acupuncture can be just as effective at relieving symptoms as prescription drugs. Perhaps this ancient remedy could also be a modern medical marvel.

Remarkable Acupuncture

By Frank Gemmato L.Ac

Providing cost–effective health maintenance and treatment for existing medical conditions are my primary focus. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine stimulate the body’s capacity to heal and regenerate itself. The list of conditions that acupuncture effectively treats is extensive. An entire range of ailments from asthma to digestive disorders to menstrual problems are all amenable to the safe and beneficial effects of acupuncture. Virtually all conditions can be helped by acupuncture treatment.

This is because Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the person and can thus be tailored to an individual’s needs. Think of acupuncture treatment for pain of any kind, especially when the pain results from a blockage of energy or internal imbalance. In my practice, I am constantly attempting to address the source or causative level of the imbalance. Nothing can treat pain as effectively, safely, and specifically.   An important area of interest for me has been helping sufferers from addictions to various substances and behaviors. People involved in individual and group therapy, 12–Step programs, and other self–help modalities often notice remarkable progress with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture facilitates relaxation. and is well–documented in its effectiveness to reduce cravings for drugs, alcohol, cigarettes.

In fact, for stress reduction and certain emotional disorders, acupuncture is unparalleled in its ability to calm and ease the tensions and overwork and many common anxieties incident to modern life. By freeing the blockages of energy, acupuncture aids the patient in gaining valuable insight into her problems.

Acupuncture has also been proven to be highly effective in multi–disciplinary treatment programs. For the past nine years I have assisted in treating thousands of patients suffering from a wide range of diseases: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and lupus. Integrating the disciplines of acupuncture and naturopathy with allopathic medicine can provide a synergistic effect.

Finally, I use acupuncture and Chinese herbs as a preventive medicine in order to help people stay well. Generally, once a client has had a course of four to eight treatments, he will return seasonally for a Tune–Up Treatment, which is offered at a reduced rate. According to Eastern philosophy, disease results when our relationship to the seasons is out of order. Proper diet, exercise and stress reduction help to maintain vibrant health in the meantime. Many patients enjoy receiving maintenance treatments, a great opportunity to do something proactively for their health.

The attainment and maintenance of perfect health is more of a process rather than a goal. We are on this road together. One of the reasons I became an acupuncturist was that I realized that my own healing depended on helping other to heal. And indeed it has! Over the past 14 years, I have been privileged to witness the healing and awakening of thousands of clients. And I have come to know that a patient is not her symptoms. There is a core of wholeness and inner peace that illness cannot touch. Our life is a journey for which we are ultimately responsible, but we do not travel alone. We need the help and support of one another. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are gentle, effective, supportive, and can lead to a deeper, fuller enjoyment of life.

Secrets of Weight Loss

By Frank Gemmato L.Ac

It’s no secret that we are overweight. Obesity rates have now topped 50 percent. This means that if the person you’re standing next to is not overweight, then you probably are. The super sizing of portions, from Big Gulps to extra-large fries, is part of the problem. But there is a deeper issue involved here: many are using food to fill an emotional or spiritual void. Weight loss programs are a multi-billlion dollar industry, but they don’t seem to work. We just keep getting fatter and fatter.

It seems to me that the only hope of solving this problem lies in permanently changing the way we relate to food. It is equally important to embark on a weight management program that is based on timeless natural principles. The body is miraculous indeed, and given the proper conditions, it will restore itself to a normal weight in a relatively short amount of time.

Here are some suggestions for healthy weight loss:

  • Reduce carbohydrates. Research now shows that we are in a state of carbohydrate overload. This is especially true of the high starch carbs: potatoes, rice, pasta and bread, as well as refined sugars. These foods trigger the release of too much insulin, which over time can put the body in a state of insulin resistance.
  • Increase quality proteins. Eating more quality proteins favors a more efficient metabolism based on the burning of fat. Organically raised meat. Eggs and white meat fish are good sources of protein.
  • Eats lots of fresh fruits vegetable. These are the good carbohydrates. Broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, squash, and fresh fruit in season will greatly aid in reducing unwanted fat from the body.
  • Chew food well. Simply chewing food thoroughly, until it is almost liquid, will reduce the quantity of food consumed and greatly aid in proper digestion and elimination.
  • Exercise 30-60 minutes per day. All form of aerobic exercise can help in removing toxins and fluid accumulation as well as aiding in fat metabolism.

Ketogenic Diets
With the supervision of a properly trained health care professional, a ketogenic diet can aid in removing weight rapidly and safely. A ketogenic approach to weight management involves the induction of state of mild ketosis in the body. This enables the body to begin using fat for energy. Boundless energy and absolutely no cravings are the result. Various practitioners now offer this technology to aid individuals in accomplishing their weight loss goals without the use of supplements or special foods.

A ketogenic diet will not leave you with sagging skin, circles under your eyes or other signs of fatigue. These signs are usually the result of metabolic stimulants and diuretics, which can actually dehydrate and deplete muscle stores in the body. On the contrary, the person undergoing ketosis is strong, healthy and radiant because the weight they are losing is fat only.

When embarking on any weight loss program it is important to be under the care of a qualified health practitioner. Your health history and current medications will need to be considered. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other obesity related disease will begin to improve as you lose weight. This will necessitate an adjustment to existing medications.

May this be the year we begin to reverse the skyrocketing trend in obesity. My we learn to find peace and contentment in our work, families, activities and from a sensible diet based on natural principles.
